James Cameron is opening up about the possibility of the next two Avatar movies not getting made.
The 71-year-old filmmaker has already shot scenes for at least Avatar 4, but recently, he’s made comments about still not being sure the franchise will officially continue – even with a release date already locked in.

Avatar: Fire and Ash just hit theaters this weekend, but a fourth movie is also already in the works!
The third installment was released on Friday (December 19), and has already reached nearly $100 million at the domestic box office, plus $257 million overseas.
If you didn’t know, the James Cameron-led franchise is already fully written through the fifth movie, with a possible sixth and seventh in the works too.
Earlier this year, he addressed past comments about possibly not directing four and five, noting he’ll still be behind the camera as “there’s no reason not to. I’m healthy, I’m good to go.”

The opening weekend box office numbers are in for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
James Cameron‘s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the follow up to 2022′s Avatar: The Way of Water, takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.
The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass and Kate Winslet, and just hit theaters on December 19.

On multiple occasions, Matt Damon has lamented turning down an offer to star in Avatar from James Cameron—an opportunity he has said would have earned him 10% of the gross profits from the original 2009 film, totaling more than $120 million.
However, the acclaimed filmmaker is now denying that such an offer was ever made.
“He was never offered the part,” James tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on December 18. “I can’t remember if I sent him the script or not. I don’t think I did?”
