It was announced almost exactly three years ago that Gerard Butler and Mike Colter‘s movie Plane was getting a sequel, but it never happened. Now, we have more info on what happened.

Mike was set to lead the sequel, Ship, and while Gerard wasn’t expected to star in the film alongside him, a cameo appearance was probably and he was going to return as a producer.

In a new interview, Mike said the movie was canceled after Gerard backed out of the project at the last minute.

The How to Train Your Dragon live-action sequel is officially in production!

Filmmaker Dean DeBlois‘ second installment was confirmed months before the first live-action adaptation hit theaters, and he’ll return as writer, director and executive producer.

Last week, Dean confirmed they were back in action to start work on the sequel.

“Back in the saddle! Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! 🐉 The adventure begins…….. 🐉 🖤,” he shared on Instagram, along with a pic of himself with a clapperboard.

Here’s a synopsis: When Hiccup and Toothless discover a secret ice cave filled with hundreds of wild dragons and a mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of an epic battle to save the future of men and dragons!

With the upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters on June 11, 2027, in production, we’re taking a look at the confirmed cast of returning stars, and the new additions who have been announced.

Gerard and Morgan chatted with their pals before heading their separate ways.

Gerard currently has some time off from work until he begins promoting his upcoming movie Greenland 2: Migration, which will be released in theaters on January 9, 2026. Returning for the sequel are Morena Baccarin and Roman Griffith Davis as Gerard‘s family members. The sequel will follow the family “as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.”
