Yellowstone has just come to an end after airing the fifth season finale, and perhaps the series finale, on Sunday night (December 15)!

While a season six renewal has not been confirmed, there have been some questions about the future of the show, even though it was previously said to end after this season.

Star Kelly Reilly even shared an emotional post ahead of the finale, saying this is the end of the show as we know it. However, it was recently announced a spinoff is in the works with her character!

So, how did Yellowstone end? The season finale was jam-packed and included yet another death.

The finale starts off with several of the ranch hands saying their goodbyes and where they are off to next. Jimmy, Mia and Travis go back to the 6666 in Texas, while Walker says he’s going to follow his girlfriend on the rodeo circuit.

Kayce sold off the Yellowstone ranch to Chief Thomas Rainwater for $1.25/acre, the same amount the Duttons purchased it for originally. As part of the deal, he secured the North Camp land for him, where he would live with Monica and Tate.

Speaking of land, Beth shows Rip a plot of land asking if they could find a way to make that their new home, and after they discussed it and he agreed, she said she already bought it that morning.

The Duttons laid patriarch John Dutton to rest at a small funeral with just the family, minus Jamie, where Beth promised to get retribution for her father’s death.

Following the funeral, Beth went straight to Jamie’s house, armed with bear spray and a big knife, where she snuck up on her estranged brother and the two got into a brawl.

During their fight, Jamie tells her that she is going to be arrested and charged with their father’s murder and she’ll rot in a jail cell as he oversees the ranch being sold in pieces to be transformed into a recreational destination.

She informs him that it was already sold and he gets more angry, but Rip shows up and throws him into a wall. Before Rip could do much damage, Beth interrupts him and shoves the knife right into Jamie’s heart and demanding he look her right in the eyes to fulfill her promise of being the last face he sees.

Next, she tells Rip to call 911, and that he should take the body to the train station, the ravine over the state border where there’s no police jurisdiction. She says she’ll spin a story that Jamie assaulted her and he ran off while she was unconscious.

Rip and Lloyd dispose of the body and set Jamie’s car on fire in a field in Iowa, while Beth’s story is validated and there are warrants issued for Jamie’s arrest.

At the end of the episode, Yellowstone signage is removed from the ranch by the tribe. Mo Brings Plenty follows a group of kids into the woods where he finds them destroying Dutton family headstones. He stops them and says it’s hallowed ground and as he puts headstones back in place, we hear the voice of Elsa Dutton, from 1883 played by Isabel May, as she narrates the ending moments and connects dots tracing back to the family’s first trek from Texas to Montana.

At the end of the Sunday (December 1) episode, a promo for next week’s episode aired. During the episode, a voiceover said, “Only one episode left until the season finale of Yellowstone.”

Fans immediately took to social media to point out that the voice said “season finale” and not “series finale.”

While this isn’t solid proof, as nothing has been made official, it does give fans some hope!

Denim Richards‘ Colby Mayfield had an unfortunate accident during the episode.

Colby was rescuing Carter who got trapped and cornered in a stall by a troubled horse. After Carter escaped from the stall, Colby got kicked in the chest by the horse, causing him to die. Carter then shot the horse.

Denim Richards has been playing ranch hand Colby Mayfield since the very first episode of the series. He appeared as a recurring character in the first two seasons and was bumped up to series regular in season three.

Yellowstone is currently set to end after this season, where there are only two more episodes remaining. However, there is a report that suggests it could continue with a sixth season!

THR asked when she learned she’d be killed off the show, and she said it was when she received the script for the episode, recalling, “It kind of rolls like everybody else’s; you read it, usually. For a long time in my career, I play a really good character to kill.”

Her character in 1883, the Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone prequel, Claire Dutton, also died.

She continued, “Taylor is special, he has been for me, because a death for me just means a life somewhere else, and he immediately moved me to another show. So, it’s a fun thing to read and then be like, ‘Oh, I’m doing a different thing now.’”

And then, it was revealed that her character put the hit on John Dutton, aka Kevin Costner’s character.

When asked if she knew that was the plan for her character, she responded, “No. That I was going to be the most hated villain in all of the world? No, (laughs) I didn’t know that. I did know there was an exit strategy for him, but I don’t think I was supposed to go as soon as I did. I think that was going to happen [with John], but because we had to wrap this all up in lightning speed, I think it had to go down the way it went. I believe I was meant to go into the next season and continue on as a character. So I think because of the situation, everything got changed around. The storyline had to go full throttle to figure out how to tie up every end and move things along. I’m grateful. It’s a pretty monumental role that I think goes down in history in a way because of what happened and how it played out.”

According to a report from Puck News (via TV Line), stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who portray Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler on the series, had been looking to take over as the show’s leads and sign new deals to remain on the show for a potential new season.

Should this come to fruition, it would be possible for Yellowstone to get a sixth season renewal!

There has been no further updates on this, apart from Kelly herself speaking out about the possibility.

In the episode titled, “Desire Is All You Need,” after an event rattles the state of Montana, nothing will ever be the same.

At the start of the episode, it was revealed that Kevin‘s character John Dutton was found with a fatal gunshot wound in the bathroom of the Montana governor’s mansion.

After arriving at the house, Beth and Kayce rush inside to find out what happened. While you see a man’s body on the floor, his face is not shown, while a forensic worker swabs the hand.

Even though he does not make an appearance, Kevin was still the first cast member listed in the opening credits sequence, and he is listed as an executive producer in the end credits.

Leading up to the fifth season’s return, director Christina Voros opened up about the secrecy around the show’s scripts, with some saying it was even more secretive than Marvel.

“We have some people in the crew who worked in the Marvel universe, and they thought what we were doing was crazy,” she told THR.

“Really, it was all borne out of protecting what Taylor [Sheridan] and this cast and this family of creators has built over the years, and knowing how much anticipation there was for these scripts. The energy around it was more about protecting it for the audience than it was some clandestine thing, and we went to great, great lengths,” she added. “We didn’t have a script coordinator; I took over that role and did the redactions for every cast member. Most of the cast only got the scenes they were in. So for a large portion of the cast, even for some of our seven-year veterans, they will be learning what happens when the show premieres.”

Christina also revealed how they kept everything so secretive on set.

“In a strange way, we likened it to COVID protocols. What you don’t have access to won’t make you informed. So it was a tricky process because you can’t just give someone their lines — there’s information their character may have learned in other scenes,” Christina said. “There was a certain amount of art that went into strategizing what information people had to be able to embody their characters, and know what their characters know without opening up any of the more sensitive material to people who didn’t need to know it. And it was never out of a fear of anyone in the family not protecting the story. It was more that, if you know something, you might accidentally mention it. We were just protecting the cast and crew from even having that information, so we didn’t have to worry about whether or not they were keeping some things secret.”

“So the process of redaction added a whole other layer; not only for me, but really for every department. Typically, the department gets the scripts and they share them with everyone in their team, everything from people doing clearances to people picking paint colors. So this strategy extended to not just getting scripts for actors, but also what needed to be shared within key crew and personnel to allow them to do their jobs without having to bear the weight of keeping secrets. I really have to give a shout out to everyone on our creative team, because it added several layers of work and strategic information sharing across every department.”

Christina also noted that while they had scenes with extras, they filmed variations, with some actors having different dialogue so no one could go home and share what they did that day. She said they had closed sets, much like you would while filming nude scenes.

“We had very, very closed sets. We treated every scene really as if it was a closed set, so you had the same protocols as if you had nudity on set, where it was only key personnel at the monitors,” she said. “When we would do blocking rehearsals, typically the cast runs the lines and the ACs put down marks. In these blocking rehearsals, we wouldn’t actually run the dialogue. The actors would move around the space, landing on their marks. But they wouldn’t actually say the dialogue, and only the people in the closed set would actually see the scenes. So, it was rather cloak and dagger.”

Wendy Moniz is saying goodbye.

The 55-year-old actress filmed her final scene on Yellowstone as Governor Lynelle Perry for the Paramount Network series, and she paid tribute to the show in an emotional caption.

“Series wrap for me on Yellowstone and been having alllll the feels; sentimental, proud, grateful to name a few,” she wrote. “What a beautiful experience I’ve had here; just incredibly fortunate to have worked with so many talented, dedicated, and kind people since 2017.”

Taylor Sheridan’s latest spinoff has secured four stars nearing deals to appear in the series, TVLine reports.

The show was previously known as 2024, but now tentatively is titled The Madison, and is “rumored to follow wealthy matriarch Stacy Clyburn and her family as they leave New York City and head to Montana in the wake of her husband and brother-in-law’s tragic deaths in a plane crash.”

Casting for supporting roles is still ongoing, and production is set to begin later in August in Montana, New York and Texas, with a tentative premiere date sometime in 2025 after the premiere of Yellowstone‘s Season 5B on November 10.

Paramount released a ton of Yellowstone news today (May 18) at the 2022 Paramount Upfronts in New York City.

In addition to the previously announced news of the cast of 1932 that was announced this week, the network and showrunner Taylor Sheridan also revealed a few other details about the Western series and its’ franchise.

Cops is canceled.

The long-running half-hour documentary reality crime show is coming to an end at Paramount Network amid global protests condemning systemic racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd‘s murder, Deadline confirmed on Tuesday (June 9).

“Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a Paramount Network spokesperson told the outlet.

The show first premiered on Fox in 1989, airing for 25 seasons, and was rebooted in 2013 at Spike TV, which rebranded as Paramount Network in 2018. The series has been off the air since June 1.

Similarly, A&E pulled episodes of its docuseries, Live PD, amid protests, and is “still evaluating the right time to bring it back though a return this weekend appears unlikely at the moment.”
