Katie Holmes is breaking her silence after the tragic death of her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek.
On Wednesday (February 11), James passed away after battling colorectal cancer since August 2023. He was 48.
Hours later, Katie, who starred as Joey Potter opposite James as Dawson Leery on the hit teen drama, took to Instagram to pay tribute to her late co-star.

The former co-stars, who also briefly dated back in the late ’90s, spent the evening filming scenes for their upcoming movie Happy Hours on Wednesday (December 3) in New York City. Katie is not only starring, but also writing and directing!
Happy Hours is described as “a story about two people (Jackson, Holmes) navigating their relationship within the challenges of careers and family responsibilities and the pursuit of love, despite life’s inevitable obstacles. It’s a character-driven dramedy that explores the emotional journey of young loves who reconnect as adults, with the connective thread of shared joys, loss, and hope.”

The show’s original cast including Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, reunited for a staged reading of the pilot episode on Monday night (September 22) at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

The show’s original leads, Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson, all participated in the staged reading of the pilot episode on Monday night (September 22) at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. If you don’t know, the event was held to benefit Dawson actor James Van Der Beek and F Cancer. James announced his diagnosis with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2024, after being diagnosed in 2023.
James could not be in attendance due to illness, but he did send a video message. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read the leading role in his place.
Also on hand for the event were cast members Busy Philipps, Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe, as well as Broadway stars Renee Elise Goldsberry and Norm Lewis. Renee acted as the narrator for the evening, while Norm performed a Phantom of the Opera song!
James actually recorded a video to introduce James‘ performance, and said, “Now, nobody in their right mind would ever draw a parallel between the two, but one very big similarity between Dawson and The Phantom of the Opera is that when both of them were faced with the reality that the woman they loved truly loved somebody else, they said, ‘Go to him. Go to him now before I change my mind.’. Of course only one resulted in a crying face meme,” he said.
Another surprise moment was a cameo from director Steven Spielberg, who is mentioned in the pilot. He sent in a video message, where he said, “Dawson, you made it…Maybe someday, I will get to have a Dawson’s closet.”
Busy joined the series well after the pilot episode, so she actually read the role of Pacey’s English teacher who he loses his virginity to. Apparently, Busy and Joshua went for it in the kiss moment!
