The 36-year-old actress was interviewed for the new book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, which is out now.

Nina played Elena Gilbert, as well as doppelgänger Katherine Pierce, throughout the first six seasons of the show. She left the show and later returned for the series finale in season eight.

In the book, Nina revealed that show’s three female leads – herself, Kat Graham, and Candice King – were the lowest paid for the first two seasons.

“Candice, Kat, and I were the three lowest-paid series regulars in the first two seasons,” Nina said in the book (via People). “It was a bit of a tricky situation because my contract only said to play Elena, but I was playing multiple characters, which doubled my workload. I had to be on set for double the amount of time, I had to memorize double the amount of lines. I wanted to play Katherine, but I wanted to be compensated fairly for that, and I wanted to be an equal to the boys.”

Nina claims that the studio eventually told the writers to stop writing for Katherine because they “had to pay” Nina whenever the character was used.

Showrunner Julie Plec confirmed this.

“It got really heated, and so it basically got phoned down back to us writers that we were not allowed to write Katherine in at all ever, which of course was not something that I felt was right or fair,” Julie said.

Nina eventually got more money from the studio, but she never reached pay parity with co-stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

“They just said out of principle they wouldn’t bump me up to being equal to the boys,” Nina said. “So that was probably the most hurtful because it felt like I was really working hard and we shot eighteen-hour days sometimes, and nights, and I was putting my absolute heart and soul, blood, sweat, and tears into it. I remember feeling like the studio didn’t appreciate what I was bringing to the show, and it felt like they were saying that all the hard work I was putting into it didn’t matter to them and that I wasn’t an equal to my male counterparts, and so that was upsetting to me.”

When Nina returned for the final season, she only appeared in the series finale because the studio only agreed to give her equal pay for one episode, even though she was willing to do more.

Nina said, “I was always open to coming back for the finale, and storyline-wise it made sense. I felt like it was important and it needed to happen for the show, it needed to happen for the fans. It was just really important to me that at the end of the show, as a woman, I wanted to make sure that I was compensated and that I was an equal to my male counterparts on the show, and so it came down to that.”

“I needed to be paid parity to the boys. I had to put my foot down and say if it didn’t happen I wouldn’t be able to come back,” she said. “And it wasn’t about the money — I didn’t give a s— about the money at all — it was the principle.”

“It was my second time trying to make this point. It wasn’t about the actual dollar amount, it was about being an equal. They really didn’t want to give it to me, and I politely declined the offer,” Nina said.

Julie had to step in and Nina only was brought on for the one episode.

“I’m very happy that we were able to make it work and that I came back, because I wanted to be part of the goodbye,” she said.

Nina also gave a rare quote about dating one of her co-stars while filming the show.

“There was a bunch of drama around that [audition] because I was dating Rob Mayes at the time, but they didn’t know that. We were trying to keep it really secret because we were afraid that if they found out, they wouldn’t cast one or both of us,” she admitted, per Us Weekly.

As we know, the role went to Ian instead.

“It got awkward because I did get cast but he didn’t, and then we subsequently broke up. Then, I ended up eventually, years later, dating the actual Damon,” she reflected.

The two began to date in 2010 and were together for three years, though they stayed a couple on-screen for longer. The two have also remained friendly years later.

Julie Plec, the creator of the series, also reflected on their on-screen and off-screen romance in the book.

“Nina had a boyfriend on the pilot. Ian had a girlfriend. Somewhere during season 1 they were both single and we were all like, ‘Oh dear’…you were getting this energy of how much people cared and how passionate they were, but when they were mixing up real life with the fake life is when you’re like, ‘Be careful with yourselves,’” she cautioned.

Ian Somerhalder is opening up about a difficult moment he experienced while filming The Vampire Diaries.

In an excerpt from the upcoming book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of the Vampire Diaries, the actor revealed that during Season 3, he was so unhappy with the direction of his character (Damon Salvatore) that he nearly quit the CW show.

Ian explained that he didn’t want Damon to become a romantic lead as the character of Stefan (Paul Wesley) got to explore a dark villain arc.

“I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon, so much so that at one point I was sitting across from Julie [Plec, co-creator] in her office in Atlanta almost in tears—actually, my eyes were quite misty—and asked out of the show,” he admitted.

“I was so angry about it. I wanted off. Because I saw the writing on the wall. Damon was heading toward the love-interest role. I was like, ‘S–t, I’m in my early thirties, I’ve got a lot of this heat because of this show, I’m sure I could go find something that’s really cool and dark and edgy.’”

Julie convinced him to stay, reminding him of the six-year contract he signed, and assured him that there would be a balance in his storyline.

“I was like, ‘They’re going to turn me into a sappy character.’ Julie was like, ‘You’re not leaving the show. First of all, you’re one of the stars and one of the parts of the beating heart of the show; and two, you signed a six-year contract, so that’s not happening; and three, don’t worry, there has to be layers,’” he explained.

Julie added in the book: “I said, ‘If one’s going dark, the other has to go light, there’s a balance in the narrative that we want to be playing around with these characters and giving you all exciting and interesting things to do, and this is Paul’s time. Let Paul have his time.’”

He would continue on with the show, which ran from September 2009 through March 2017 on The CW.

While speaking at Vampire Fan Weekend, the 37-year-old Twilight actress reminisced about the early days of her relationship with the 46-year-old Vampire Diaries actor.

According to Nikki, the two of them first crossed paths when she was working on her first ever film role, Thirteen. Although the two didn’t start dating until much later, she said that she and Ian remained friends and were in similar circles for many years before they got together.

“He was with a friend and he asked, ‘Who is that person?’ Shortly after that, we were introduced by a friend because we had similar philanthropic goals. We worked in similar areas in that capacity, so we stayed in touch as friends for many many years,” Nikki shared at the convention.

During those years, Ian dated his co-star Nina Dobrev and Nikki was married to American Idol contestant Paul McDonald. She shared that it was a conversation about her divorce from Paul in 2014 that lead to her relationship with Ian.

At the convention, she recalled, “We were hanging out one day and he asked me, ‘How’s Paul?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, he’s great! We got divorced, but he’s great and we still play music together.’ But then he was like, ‘Do you have time for dinner?’”

Nikki says it was that dinner that started their relationship. During her panel at the convention, she said that Ian confessed his feelings to her, saying, “He immediately said, ‘Well, I’m dating someone but I’m gonna go tell her that this is over because it’s always been you.’ And I was like, ‘No, don’t do that!’ But he was like, ‘No, I waited a certain amount of time.’”

Ian and Nikki began dating later in 2014 before they got married in a private ceremony the following year. Now, the couple shares two children together and have been focusing on their family life on a small farm in California.

Recently, the two talked about whether or not they ever plan to return to acting.

Ian Somerhalder is reacting to his wife Nikki Reed‘s controversial film Thirteen.

“I think it speaks volumes to all of these were passion areas of mine that I pursued on my own, which for anyone listening, curiosity is the best, that’s the best thing you can have,” she added.

Ian Somerhalder is opening up about his upbringing.

If you didn’t know, the 46-year-old Vampire Diaries actor grew up in rural Louisiana, and in a new interview, he looked back at his humble beginnings.

“My dad taught me in the wetlands, when you take more than you give back, there’s an imbalance,” Ian shared with Fox News. “And guess who loses? We do. Nature will always find a way to regenerate, it’s us who loses.”

“I think it’s in the rearview mirror. I do,” Ian told People of his acting career. “Well, I dunno, we got the rights back for V Wars, but I just don’t know how the hell we would ever make a TV show. We’re building three companies at the same time, raising kids.”

Ian and Nikki both appeared on season one of V Wars, which aired for just one season on Netflix.

Nikki added, “I don’t make any definitive statements about anything. I don’t look at anything. I work over 90 hours a week right now. I’m running a company full time and just launched another, a shared company with the Absorption Company. And I just can’t imagine being able to pivot my energy away, but there’s no door closed.”

September 2024 marks the 15th anniversary of the premiere of The Vampire Diaries and the 20th anniversary of Lost, which was one of the 45-year-old actor’s first major breakout roles.

In a new interview, Ian looked back at his time on the fan-favorite shows and explained why he decided to take a step back from acting.

Keep reading to find out more…While speaking to People, Ian called his Lost job a “very humbling experience,” especially since his character experienced one of the first major deaths in season 1. While he returned throughout the series several times for guest appearances, Ian admitted that his initial exit was very hard on him at the time.

“Losing that, I was the first one cast and the first one killed, that was a sort of tough pill to swallow,” Ian admitted, adding that his brief time in Hawaii helped inspire his passion for environmental conservation.

“I got to work on a lot of reef conservation,” Ian explained. “I got to work on a lot of soil and water conservation even there. This is 2004, I was already doing this, my voice just wasn’t as big. Cut to 2005, [I] left Lost, which was humbling. And then very beginning of 2009 came Vampire Diaries. And that was a rocket ship. Initially, it was a very, very, very young audience, but that audience matured and it got bigger and bigger.”

Ian went on to note that “streaming changed the game” for both Lost and The Vampire Diaries and introduced a whole new audience to his work both on and off screen.

“[The Vampire Diaries] now has been seen by almost like 1.2 billion people globally. So if you just run those numbers, you sort of step back for a second and think about that, there’s 8 billion people on the planet, so it’s roughly about one-eighth of the people walking the face of the planet have somehow interfaced with this IP, the story,” Ian said.

“They’ve been affected by it, maybe they’ve seen it, heard about it,” he continued. “That’s an unparalleled platform. So if you can chain link some knowledge and passion together for me, animals and soil health regeneration at a very large scale, that’s going to be quite substantial.”

Ian then added that he has “enormous gratitude” for the shows as they gave him a platform to speak about projects close to his heart.

“That path has gotten me to where I feel most authentic anyway, which is in a pair of cowboy boots, feeding the cows and running horses,” Ian said, who now lives on a farm with wife Nikki Reed and their two kids – 7-year-old daughter Bodhi and a 1-year-old son.

While he’s grateful for his past roles, Ian admitted that his main priorities are off screen projects.

“August 19th makes five years since I was professionally on camera as an actor/producer,” Ian pointed out. “I stepped away from that after V Wars to build these companies, launch films like Kiss the Ground, Common Ground and Ground Swell and raise my kids. I remember sitting with my management talking about this, saying, ‘Hey, this is the only thing I’ve ever known that’s ever sustained my family, and I’m walking away from it,’ at this sort of peak, could have gone and done anything, but these partnerships mean way more to me.”

“I say this in all humility, in all respect, but I would much rather do this than go spend two months in some city, shooting a TV show away from my family or transporting my family back and forth,” Ian explained. “Once you reach a certain level, you’re like, ‘Okay, I want to focus on family and the future of farming and food and energy and the big things.’ I don’t need to chase awards and anything that would make me feel better about myself.”

He concluded, “The fact now is I get to partner with people that are launching things like the Greater Ground initiative where they’re literally holding the hands and investing in these groups of people, these farmers that are actually creating this food that our pets and us eat. That’s huge. So you go and you do all these fancy things and you realize at the end of it, it’s the grounding stuff that matters.”

In a recent interview, the couple explained why they don’t miss acting.

Ian Somerhalder is talking about leaving Hollywood.

The 45-year-old Vampire Diaries alum spoke about his retirement from acting and decision to move to a farm with E! News at the Los Angeles premiere of Common Ground.

“I love what I did for a really long time,” he told the outlet. “I love making films, I just did it for so long. We had an amazing run.”

The documentary focuses on the need for sustainable and eco-friendly farming and interviews multiple celebrities, including Ian.

He also served as an executive producer with his wife, Nikki Reed.

“When you see the way that nature operates, you find compassion,” Nikki said. “It’s a beautiful thing to see what’s happening with children, to watch them participate in the growing of their food and the understanding of what food is and where it comes from.”

The couple have a daughter, Bodhi Soleil, 6, and announced the birth of their son in June.

“Just walking around my farm with my family, feeding the animals. We have goats, chickens, horses and cows. Those are the days you realize are meaningful,” Ian told People a few months ago.

Reflecting on his new family-centric lifestyle, Ian reminisced on his experiences on film and TV sets, but emphasized that his new family-focused lifestyle can give him something more.

“This is our 2.0 version,” he said, adding that it’s “about to be 3.0 version.”

Nikki shared that her time connecting with nature has “become a way of living so much simpler.”

The 44-year-old actor was joined by 16-year-old daughter Lola and 15-year-old son Nakoa-Wolf at the documentary screening on Thursday (January 11) at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.

By fusing journalistic expose’ with deeply personal stories from those on the front lines of the food movement, Common Ground unveils a dark web of money, power, and politics behind our broken food system. The film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us.

Jason was joined at the premiere by fellow narrators Laura Dern and Ian Somerhalder, who attended with his wife Nikki Reed, an executive producer on the project.

The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder left Hollywood behind just about four years ago and now he’s explaining the reason why.

If you don’t know, Ian is married to actress Nikki Reed and they have two children: daughter Bodhi, 6, and their son, who is 5 months old.

“I stepped away from acting a little over four years ago to raise my kids, build my companies and get these films launched,” he shared.

The films Ian is referring to are his 2020 documentary Kiss the Ground about regenerative agriculture in the fight against climate change, and his new doc Common Ground, which is a follow up film.

He continued, “By using healthy soil management practices, we are building a secure future today, or tomorrow. And once you do have children, you realize I am no longer alone here. I am leaving this to my children.”

“We’re farm people, we produce most of our own food, I live in my cowboy boots,” he continued.

“Walking through the farm with kids and dogs and family…every stop, you’re pulling off of trees or off of bushes, pulling up out of the ground and feeding everyone as you’re moving through the farm,” he told E! News.
