The Team USA’s men’s hockey team received roaring cheers and applause during Donald Trump‘s State of the Union address on Tuesday evening (February 24) in Washington, DC.

Members of the gold-winning team first met with the President earlier that day in the Oval Office, before making an appearance during the address later that night.

While 20 members of the team made the trip to the White House, including siblings Jack and Quinn Hughes, goalie Connor Hellebuyck and more, there were five guys who did not go.

Brock Nelson, Jackson LaCombe, Jake Oettinger, Jake Guentzel and Kyle Connor all skipped the DC visit on Tuesday.

According to People, local reporters noted that Brock skipped the trip to go back home to his family, and Guentzel went back to Tampa to prep for a game the next day. The other players also returned home to prep for their team games.

Towards the beginning of his State of the Union address, Trump welcomed the Team USA men’s hockey team, congratulated them once again and even revealed one team member will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom!

“Here with us tonight is a group of winners who just made the entire nation proud. The men’s gold medal Olympic hockey team,” Trump said as “USA!” chants began and the team filed in to the room above him.

“They beat a fantastic Canadian team in overtime as everybody saw,” he continued after the cheers and chants died down. “As did the American women, who will soon be coming to the White House.”

Trump‘s claim that the women’s hockey team will visit the White House comes after they previously turned down an invitation due to prior commitments. Since then, Flavor Flav has invited the women to celebrate their win with him in Las Vegas.

“They were in the Oval Office before, and I just want to say a second, very big congratulations to Team USA, but I have to say that… And I told them this and we took a vote of the team. I said, ‘Anybody that votes no, I’m not doing it,’” Trump continued during the SOTU address. “So they stood there and they worried about saying no, ’cause I never seen a goaltender play as well as Connor Hellebuyck.”

“I just want to tell you that the members of this great hockey squad will be very happy to hear, based on their vote and my vote, and in this case, my vote was more important,” he went on. “That I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor, which we will be giving, and which has been given to many athletes over the years… It’s called the highest civilian honor in our country, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

Earlier in the week, Trump‘s invite to the men’s hockey team drew much backlash online as he referenced the women’s team, and how he “would be impeached” if he didn’t also invite them.

Flavor Flav is inviting the Team USA Women’s Hockey lineup, who just won gold at the 2026 Olympics, to hang out with him on a trip to Las Vegas after they turned down Donald Trump’s Washington, DC invitation.

This all came on the heels of the comment Trump made about the women’s team in a phone call to the men’s team after their gold medal match.

The fan fave entertainer posted on his Twitter, “Formal invitation sent to the women’s hockey team,,; but if anyone knows someone with them,,, have them reach out to my great at the email in my bio. Let’s do this,!!!”

He included the email that was written to the rep for the Women’s Team, which stated, in part: “We saw the story about the men’s invite to the White House, and the not quite invite for the women’s team. Flay recently posted on social media an idea and invite for the women’s hockey team to Las Vegas for a real celebration. He always stands behind everything he says and does. If there is an interest for the team to come to Las Vegas and celebrate with Flay – we will figure it out on our end and make it a lovely experience. I wanted you to know that the offer is real and have my contact information.”

He then posted an update in an Instagram comment, captured by Yahoo, saying they accepted!

One of the members of the Men’s hockey team is also now speaking out about the viral situation.

Someone recorded Donald Trump calling the Team USA Men’s Hockey team to congratulate them on winning the gold medal on Sunday (February 22) at the 2026 Olympics, beating Canada.

However, it’s a comment the 79-year-old made during the call referencing the Women’s team that has many reacting online. If you don’t know, the US Women’s team also won gold at the Olympics.

“Unbelievable. You were all unbelievable. That team is pretty good you played,” he said at one point during the call, which was posted online.

Then, he shared that he wanted to invite them to the White House, but noted he’d have to also invite the Women’s Hockey.

“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team. You do know that,” Trump said, as men’s hockey team members laughed. He then said, “I do believe I’d probably would be impeached [if the women’s team wasn’t invited].”

This comment has gone viral online.

Disgusting,” and another writing on X, “The women’s hockey team shouldn’t go to the White House after Trump jokes about their amazing win.”

If you don’t know, Team USA ended up winning gold during the final game of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic games at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena on Sunday (February 22) in Milan, Italy.

However, he did not let this stop him in any way.

He celebrated on the ice afterwards with his team, and smiled for the world to see – minus the missing teeth!

Eileen Gu Responds to JD Vance Criticizing Her for Representing China at Winter Olympics 2026 https://www.justjared.com/2026/02/21/eileen-gu-responds-to-jd-vance-criticizing-her-for-representing-china-at-winter-olympics-2026/ https://www.justjared.com/2026/02/21/eileen-gu-responds-to-jd-vance-criticizing-her-for-representing-china-at-winter-olympics-2026/#comments Sat, 21 Feb 2026 18:32:09 +0000 Just Jared https://www.justjared.com/2026/02/21/eileen-gu-responds-to-jd-vance-criticizing-her-for-representing-china-at-winter-olympics-2026/

Eileen Gu is reacting to Vice President JD Vance‘s criticism of her.

If you didn’t know, the 22-year-old skier was born and raised in San Francisco, Calif, but is representing China – where her mother is from – at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Vance criticized Eileen, who is the most decorated female freestyle skier in Olympic history, for her decision to represent China internationally, telling Fox News that he is only rooting for “American athletes.”

Keep reading to find out more…“I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United Sates of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope they want to compete with the United States of America,” Vance said. “So, I’m going to root for American athletes, and I think part of that is people who identify themselves as Americans. That’s who I’m rooting for this Olympics.”

Following Vance‘s comments, Eileen responded, telling USA Today, “I’m flattered. Thanks, JD! That’s sweet,” adding that she feels “like a bit of a punching bag for a certain strand of American politics at the moment.”

“So many athletes compete for a different country… people only have a problem with me doing it because they kind of lump China into this monolithic entity, and they just hate China,” the athlete continued. “So it’s not really about what they think it’s about.”

Eileen added, “And also, because I win. Like if I wasn’t doing well, I think that they probably wouldn’t care as much, and that’s OK for me.”

If you didn’t know, Eileen first opted to represent China prior to competing at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

In another new interview, Eileen explained why she decided to compete with Team China instead of Team USA at the Olympics.

“In the U.S. growing up, I had so many idols to look up to,” Eileen told The Athletic. “But in China, I feel like there are a lot fewer of those. I’d have a much greater impact in China than in the U.S., and that’s ultimately why I made my decision.”

If you didn’t see, Donald Trump slammed Team USA Olympic skier Hunter Hess, calling him a “loser.” Find out why.

Alysa Liu just won the gold medal for Team USA in women’s single skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics and her big smile showed off her frenulum piercing.

While you might initially think that the spikes from the jewelry are a form of braces for teeth straightening, it’s actually just a piercing that she did herself!

Keep reading to find out more…

“I pierced it a little over two years ago now,” Alysa told TMJ4 News in January 2026. “Also, I did it myself.”

“I had my sister hold up my lip, and I was looking in the mirror and I had my piercing needle and then, yeah, I just put it through,” she added.

Alysa has described the piercing as her “smiley.”

“Someone called my style ‘alternative’ and I’d agree with that,” she added. “You know how trees have rings for their age? I thought, every year I’m gonna add a new halo around my hair. So it’s been two years, so I have two. Pretty soon I’ll have a new stripe.”

Alysa Liu just brought home another gold medal for Team USA!

The 20-year-old figure skater came in first place for the Women’s Single Skating during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games on Thursday (February 19) in Milan, Italy.

Last week, Alysa won a gold medal during the Team Event and now she has added a second gold medal to her collection.

The single skating competition combined the scores from the short program and the free skate program. After the short program, Alysa was in third place, but she delivered an incredible performance in the free skate that pushed her to first place with a total score of 226.79 points.

Japan took home the other two medals with Kaori Sakamoto receiving silver and Ami Nakai getting the bronze medal.

This marks the first time that Team USA has taken home the gold medal in this event since 2002, when Sarah Hughes won. Sascha Cohen won the silver medal in 2006 and no American has received a medal in this event in the years since then.

Watch a clip of Alysa‘s free skate below!

Alysa‘s teammate Amber Glenn got a huge surprise from a music icon earlier this week.

Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo just won his 10th Olympic gold medal while competing in cross-country skiing, setting a new record!

The 29-year-old Norwegian athlete has now won five gold medals at the 2026 Games, adding to his collection from previous Olympic events. He now has 10 gold medals from across the 2018, 2022, and 2026 Olympics.

At this point, only 2 athletes in the world have won over 10 gold medals at the Olympics: Johannes and Michael Phelps, the swimming legend. By the way, Michael won his 23rd gold medal during his last ever Olympic swim back in 2016.

NBC’s Olympics Instagram page highlighted this big news, and Michael reacted in the comments by writing, “👏👏.”

“It’s obviously very satisfying to make this happen,” Klaebo said (via ESPN). “The team sprint is one of the most fun events, but also one of the hardest…There are so many strong teams and so many fast skiers, so it always comes down to tight battles. That makes it even more rewarding.”

Congrats!!!

Ilia Malinin was caught on a hot mic on Friday (February 13) at the 2026 Olympics when he shockingly fell twice during his ice skating performance, landing him in 8th place.

Leading up to the event, the 21-year-old Team USA figure skater was thought to be the gold medal front runner.

After falling, Ilia was heard on a hot mic while waiting for his scores.

He apparently said while waiting to see if he’d medal, “Beijing, I would not have skated like that,” he could be heard saying. “It’s not easy.”

In an interview (via the Athletic), he elaborated more on his thoughts about what he said on the hot mic: “I think if I went to ’22, then I would have had more experience and know how to handle this Olympic environment. But also I don’t know what the next stages of my life would look like if I went there. So now all I can do is just regroup from this and really just take in the information that happened and just figure out how to manage in the future.”

Four years ago, Ilia, when he was only 17 years old, surprisingly landed a silver medal at the U.S. Championships, but U.S. Figure Skating opted to send Vincent Zhou and Jason Brown to the 2022 Olympics instead.

See what Ilia said in his first statements after losing out on a medal.

During the men’s single skating competition at the Milano Cortina Winter Games on Friday (February 13), the 21-year-old skater came in 8th place after falling multiple times and messing up several of his attempted jumps.

The 8th place finish came as a huge shock to everyone, including Ilia, as he has expected to take home gold.

In an interview after his event, Ilia admitted he’s still processing his loss.

Keep reading to find out more…“I blew it,” Ilia admitted to NBC. “That’s honestly the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘There’s no way that just happened.’”

“I felt like going into this competition I was so ready,” he explained. “I just felt ready getting on that ice. But I think maybe that might have been the reason—that maybe I was too confident that I was gonna go well.”

Ilia, who is known as the “Quad God,” is the first and only skater to successfully land a fully rotated axel in an international competition.

He went on to say that his mistakes came from his mental state as he stepped out onto the ice, despite the fact that he’d been preparing all season and felt confident in his program.

“Finally experiencing that Olympic atmosphere—it’s crazy. It’s not like any other competition,” Ilia explained. “It’s really different.”

He continued, “I’m still so grateful that I was able to put in this work and effort to get to where I am. But of course, that was not the skate that I wanted.”

For now, Ilia – who already won gold in the figure skating event – said that he’s still processing “what just happened, and while he had “no words,” he’s looking to the future.

“Obviously I should take the stuff that I learned from here and really just improve it,” he said, “or use it to my knowledge to see what I can do in the future for this to not happen.”

The 41-year-old Olympian was unfortunately involved in a horrible accident on the ski slope while competing on Sunday (February 8). She ended up crashing and was airlifted to a hospital where she was “treated by a multidisciplinary team” and “underwent an orthopedic operation to stabilize a fracture reported in her left leg.”

The day after the crash, Lindsey returned to social media to reveal that she suffered complex tibia fracture in the crash.

After already undergoing three surgeries, Lindsey shared a new update on Friday (February 13), saying that she still has a “long, long way to go.”

Keep reading to find out more…In the video shared on Instagram, Lindsey thanked her fans for “sending me flowers, and letters, and sharks,” as she showed off a large stuffed animal shark that she was using as her pillow in her hospital bed.

“It’s just been so amazing, and really helped me a lot,” Lindsey continued. “It’s been quite a hard few days in the hospital here. I’m finally feeling more like myself, but have a long, long way to go.”

She then revealed that she expects to have at least two more surgeries.

“Tomorrow, I’ll have another surgery and hopefully that goes well, and then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I will need another surgery,” she explained. “Still don’t know exactly what that entails yet until I get some better imaging, but that’s kind of where I am right now.”

Lindsey also said that she’s “very much immobile” at Ca Foncello hospital in Trevizo, Italy, the hospital she was airlifted to after the crash on the mountains of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

“I have a lot of friends and family that have been coming to visit and like I said, the letters and the notes and everything, flowers, have just been so incredible,” she said. “And the staff and the team here has just been amazing, so I feel very lucky and fortunate to have so many people around me that have really helped me get through this, so I just want to say thank you.”

She concluded her message by showing her support for Team USA as they continue to compete in the Olympics.

“It’s been so great to watch and really lifted my spirits,” Lindsey said. “So good job team, and keep crushing it.”

Following her crash, Lindsey‘s dad spoke to press saying that “there will be no more ski races” for her.

Sturla Holm Lægreid, who just won a bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday (February 10), made a shocking confession after medaling in the games.

The 28-year-old, from Norway, revealed he recently cheated on the “love of his life.”

“There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today,” he said to Norwegian state broadcaster NRK, via a translation after his medal win. “Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful.”

“I told her about it a week ago. It’s been the worst week of my life. I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her,” Sturla added.

“I try to be a good role model, and I did something stupid. You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much,” he added.

Mikaela Shiffrin surprisingly struggled at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The 30-year-old Team U.S. alpine skier had a difficult time during her slalom run on Tuesday (February 10), and her scoring ultiamtely led to a 4th place finish for herself and teammate Breezy Johnson during the debut alpine skiing combined event, a first at the Olympics.

The new competition sees two people from the same team compete, one in a single downhill run and the other in a single slalom run, and their scores are combined for the final result.

She skied with “measured” effort and showed “tension,” an NBC announcer said during the run, via HuffPo.

Mikaela previously won the world title at the 2025 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships.

“Heading into Cortina, there are things that I, for lack of a better word, there’s things that scare me. Some of it is sort of irrational. Some things are like really very real, you know kind of logistical concerns and things like that. Most of it actually has nothing to do with sport…it’s like life oriented,” she said on What’s the Point with Mikaela Shiffrin.

“It’s things having to do with my family and the health of my family and just things that are unrelated to the performance, unrelated to the Olympics entirely. But these are things that I just simply can’t push into a box and forget they exist for 3 weeks.”

Her teammates Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan took the bronze.

She has three Olympic medals. Her career haul includes two gold medals (slalom in 2014, giant slalom in 2018) and one silver medal (combined in 2018). She is competing in her fourth Olympics.

Lindsey Vonn is addressing her crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The following day, Lindsey took to Instagram to share more details about her accident and injuries.

Keep reading to find out more…“Yesterday my Olympic dream did not finish the way I dreamt it would,” Lindsey began. “It wasn’t a story book ending or a fairy tail, it was just life. I dared to dream and had worked so hard to achieve it. Because in Downhill ski racing the difference between a strategic line and a catastrophic injury can be as small as 5 inches.”

“I was simply 5 inches too tight on my line when my right arm hooked inside of the gate, twisting me and resulted in my crash. My ACL and past injuries had nothing to do with my crash whatsoever,” she explained. “Unfortunately, I sustained a complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries to fix properly.”

The alpine ski racer went on, “While yesterday did not end the way I had hoped, and despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets. Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible feeling that I will never forget. Knowing I stood there having a chance to win was a victory in and of itself. I also knew that racing was a risk. It always was and always will be an incredibly dangerous sport.”

“And similar to ski racing, we take risks in life,” she wrote. “We dream. We love. We jump. And sometimes we fall. Sometimes our hearts are broken. Sometimes we don’t achieve the dreams we know we could have. But that is the also the beauty of life; we can try. I tried. I dreamt. I jumped.”

“I hope if you take away anything from my journey it’s that you all have the courage to dare greatly,” Lindsey concluded. “Life is too short not to take chances on yourself. Because the only failure in life is not trying. I believe in you, just as you believed in me.”

If you didn’t see, the chief of sport for U.S. Ski and Snowboard also shared an update on Lindsey‘s condition and road to recovery.

Keep reading to find out more…During a press conference on Monday (February 9), Chloe, 25, defended Hunter when she was asked about Trump‘s comments.

“My parents being immigrants, this one definitely hits pretty close to home,” the gold medal-winning snowboarder said, per Us Weekly. “I think in moments like these it is really important for us to unite and stand up for one another for all that’s going on.”

She continued, “I’m really proud to represent the United States. The U.S. has given my family and I so much opportunity, but I also think we are allowed to voice our opinions on what’s going on. I think that we need to lead with love and compassion. I would love to see some more of that.”

If you did not see the news, the 41-year-old crashed just 13 seconds into her Olympics competition and had to be airlifted off the ski slope via helicopter. She then was “treated by a multidisciplinary team” and “underwent an orthopedic operation to stabilize a fracture reported in her left leg” at Ca’ Foncello hospital, and we learned that she actually had to be transported to that hospital in a two-hour journey.

There’s also a new statement.

Anouk Patty, chief of sport for U.S. Ski and Snowboard, told the AP, “She’ll be okay, but it’s going to be a bit of a process. This sport’s brutal, and people need to remember when they’re watching [that] these athletes are throwing themselves down a mountain and going really, really fast.”

Just days before the Olympics, she tore the ACL in her knee during the downhill race at the World Cup and chose to still compete.

We’re wishing Lindsey well as she recovers.

The 21-year-old skating phenom, who famously became the first athlete to land a quadruple axel in competition and became the first skater to land seven quadruple jumps in a single program at the 2025 Grand Prix Final, has made it clear that romance is not his focus as he headed into the Olympics.

When it comes to family, skating is in his blood, as his parents Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov are both Olympians as well.

He was born on December 2, 2004 in Fairfax, Virginia, and has a younger sister Liza who also competes in figure skating.

Ilia‘s parents said that while they initially hoped he wouldn’t pursue the sport competitively, they waited until he was six before letting him step onto the ice, and even then, it was “just for fun.”
