Kate Hudson has no problem ending relationships when the time comes.

The 46-year-old Song Sung Blue actress visited SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday (February 24) at the SiriusXM Studios in Los Angeles and spoke about her hard and fast rule for breakups.

Howard asked the two-time Oscar nominee if she’d ever had her heart broken.

“Yes. Of course, yeah. But my thing was always, Howard, and still is, if a guy says they don’t want it, they’re not into it — I’m out,” she replied. “I’m never the kind of girl that goes like, ‘I want to talk about this, what are you talking about?’ I just say ‘Okay.’”

Her mindset came into play during one specific breakup she recalled, where the guy told her “I just don’t think I can do this anymore,” and Kate was ready to end it.

“I said, ‘Okay,’ and he went ‘Well, do you want to talk about it?’ and I was like, ‘No. Not really,’” she laughed. “He kept wanting to talk to me about talking about the relationship and I was like ‘No, it’s done. We’re over. Now you want to connect with me about us not being together? No. We’re done connecting.’”

These days, Kate is engaged to Danny Fujikawa, who she has been with since 2016.

Song Sung Blue is a biographical musical drama now streaming on Peacock, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire Sardina, who is nominated for Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Based on the documentary of the same name, Song Sung Blue follows the real-life couple who rose to fame in the ’80s and ’90s with their Neil Diamond and Patsy Cline tribute band, Lightning & Thunder. The pair married in 1994.

They regularly performed in the Midwest and opened for major acts like Pearl Jam.

In 1999, Claire was seriously injured after being struck by a car while gardening, resulting in the loss of her leg. Despite the life-changing injury, she continued performing with a prosthetic. In 2006, Mike passed away after suffering a head injury from a fall.

Claire went on to perform solo under the name Thunder After Lightning, and earlier this year, she and the band’s legacy were honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI).

She is still performing and has several shows in Milwaukee in the coming months, including a performance at a Neil Diamond tribute show.

It’s called Song Sung Blue alongside Hugh Jackman, and it’s based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, who performed as Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder in the 1980s.

Yes, Kate Hudson is really singing in Song Sung Blue!

Kate recently addressed the process of recording for the film.

“Craig [Brewer, the director] wanted to start in the recording studio, that was really the first time Hugh and I connected which was really nice because it’s very quiet, and you’re quite vulnerable when you’re in a recording studio,” she said via Hello, adding “You make a lot of mistakes and so it was great to break the ice that way.”

“Craig gave me great freedom for my harmonies and pushed me as well at times, saying, ‘You can lean into that more,’ and it was a wonderful way to begin this whole process.”

Kate has been recording on and off for decades at this point, including “Cinema Italiano” from the soundtrack of Nine, which remains her most viewed YouTube video on her music account. However, it took a long time for her to finally make music of her own.

Just one year prior to the film’s release, Kate made her long-awaited debut as a musician with her debut studio album Glorious, released May 2024.

The album included singles “Talk About Love,” “Live Forever” and “Gonna Find Out,” and she also performed songs from the album on the GLAAD Media Awards, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Voice.

“Why did I wait so long? I’ve done this in pieces for so long, hundreds of songs or recordings. Bits and ideas, scraps of music. But this? This was me in the process,” she said of her debut.

“Instead of witnessing, I was creating, striving, delivering these songs. What makes music transformative is that it’s so in-the-moment, so present. Even when it’s your song, people can draw their own conclusions and find their own lives in it.”

Yes, Hugh Jackman is really singing in Song Sung Blue!

And not only that, they sang live!

“We sang live too, because, you know, obviously this is a movie with music, not a musical. So all the performances are somewhere on stage. And it had to feel like they’re really in a pub. I just love it when you laugh in the middle of a song, and obviously we hadn’t recorded, [Craig Brewer, director] was using both, he was cherry picking,” Hugh said in conversation with Kate for Collider, when asked about how recording the songs before the movie even started filming affected their on-set performances. Hugh Jackman has had a long career in music as well as being a movie actor and stage performer.

“My first job in a musical was Beauty and the Beast. I played Gaston, I was 26, and in my contract, they were paying for me to have a singing lesson because I had never had a singing lesson in my life. I really learned singing on the job,” he told Billboard.

“Having said that, I always thought of myself as an actor, but my breakthrough as an actor happened in the second year of a three-year acting course, and it was while I was singing a song. I was doing ‘Anthem’ from Chess, and my acting teacher kept saying to me, ‘I feel like you’re standing outside your character, you’re just outside.’ I didn’t really know what he meant. But as I started singing that song, it was through song that I understood acting. I really connected with the lyrics. That’s when I understood the power of it, and it’s been such an incredible journey. Oklahoma, Carousel, whatever it is that I’ve done — I’ve always felt connected to it as an actor but somehow felt free through the singing of it.”

In 2019, he went on his first world tour called The Man. The Music. The Show. to perform songs from the album, The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and various Broadway and Hollywood musical numbers.

He also won a Tony in the Lead Actor in a Musical category in 2004 for his role as Peter Allen for The Boy From Oz.

Hugh does not officially have an album, but he does have various songs that charted from The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. He is also featured on soundtracks for Happy Feet, Les Misérables, Fly, featuring songs inspired by Eddie the Eagle.

The 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards took place on Sunday afternoon (February 15) in Los Angeles.

The annual awards show, which celebrates the best in independent filmmaking, with budgets less than $30 million, and several television categories as well.

This year’s awards ceremony took place at the Hollywood Palladium, and saw tons of celebrities in attendance.

Kate Hudson receives a coveted award at the 2026 Santa Barbara International Film Festival!

The Almost Famous star and her long-time friend Gwyneth Paltrow posed for photos on the red carpet at The Arlington Theatre on Friday (February 13) in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Kate was honored that night with the Arlington Artist of the Year Award, presented to her by Gwyneth, who referred to her as “kind of like a little sister to me” in a touching speech, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Kate also sat down for an onstage conversation with THR columnist Scott Feinberg.

During their chat, she talked about her desire to do “something different” after years of romantic comedies.

Kate continued, “I think when you become really famous doing that genre, it’s hard for certain filmmakers to see you in anything other than what we’re watching. These sort of things that like, ‘Well, transforming isn’t what she does’ when, in fact, it’s what I love to do.”

Having recently secured her second Academy Award nomination for Song Sung Blue, the two-time nominee is now looking toward the future and the next phase of her career.

“It doesn’t mean to me that all of a sudden I just want to be doing this for the concept of the accolades; I want to do it to put people in the theater too,” she said. “This feels like the beginning of maybe that part where I get to do a little bit more transformations than maybe I’ve been able to do in the past.”

Teyana, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for One Battle After Another, received the Vanguard Spotlight Award.

Kate, who is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for Song Sung Blue, received the Spotlight Award. Her Knives Out co-star Janelle Monae presented the award.

The 46-year-old Oscar-nominated actress joined Gemma Chan and Michelle Pfeiffer at the Giorgio Armani Privé Haute Couture Week Spring/Summer 2026 Show on Tuesday (January 27) in Paris, France.

There are five actresses competing for the prestigious award, which will be handed out at the upcoming ceremony in March.

Kate Hudson says she’s happy about how Song Sung Blue came out despite harsh criticism from the real Mike Sardina‘s son Michael Sardina Jr.

The actress received an Oscar nomination for her role in the musical biopic and is reflecting on the work that went into the movie. She plays Claire Sardina, who is based on the real musician, formerly one half of the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder with her husband, the late Mike Sardina.

“Claire is so happy and my relationship with Claire and telling her story and this love story – it’s such a love letter to them,” she told Deadline. “And I am just so grateful that Claire was and is pleased and I just can’t wait to talk to her. People’s reaction to the movie, the way it’s moved people, that’s what I think about.”

Michael Jr. previously said the film was “all lies” and “steals all the hard work that my father put in his entire life.”

Kate responded directly to his comments during a special screening, saying she wasn’t the “right person to speak to it.”

Song Sung Blue was based on the documentary of the same name about Claire and Mike.

“When I first saw this movie, Kurt and I were sitting together and it wasn’t totally put together yet. So it wasn’t color corrected, there were certain things they needed to do and balance the sound and everything and make it the whole finished movie. But the two of us held onto each other and cried,” Goldie said (via People).

She told Kate, “From the minute you did the Patsy Cline song! I mean, literally cried. And it was like one of those moments where we thought, ‘What have we just seen?’ And it was such [an] extraordinary surprise.”
