'Dirty Dancing' Sequel with Jennifer Grey Moving Forward, Production to Begin Later This Year!

Dirty Dancing 2 is officially a go!

Nearly four years after the project was first announced, it was confirmed on Tuesday (January 27) that the sequel to the beloved 1987 movie is officially happening with production set to begin later this year.

Jennifer Grey, who starred as Frances “Baby” Houseman, will return to star in sequel and will also serve as an executive producer, The Wrap announced.

Keep reading to find out more…Lionsgate will be teaming up with longtime producing partners Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson for the new project with Kim Rosenstock writing the screenplay.

“’Dirty Dancing’ remains as beloved today as it was upon its initial release, and we knew that a very special group of people would have to come together for fans to embrace a return to Kellerman’s,” Adam Fogelson, chair for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, shared in a statement. “We are beyond thrilled to announce we have assembled the perfect team to carry this film forward in partnership with Jennifer Grey.”

He continued, “There are no better producers for this movie than our longtime partners and friends Nina and Brad from ‘The Hunger Games’, and we could not be more excited to have Kim coming on board to write. With this super team now in place, we are moving full steam ahead so that both existing fans and new audiences can discover the magic, the music and the emotion that is ‘Dirty Dancing’ in a new theatrical film meant for the big screen.”

Jennifer starred alongside the late Patrick Swayze in the original movie. He sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 57 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Years after the original movie was released, a standalone spinoff movie, titled Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, was released in 2004. Patrick appeared in the movie as a dance instructor.

If you haven’t seen the talk on social, ever since Heated Rivalry was released, fans have been mentioning that Connor Storrie looks a lot like Patrick, so who knows, maybe he’ll appear in the new movie!

In a previous interview, Jennifer explained why filming the sequel will be “tricky.”
